Inspiration That Rocks! Style #3! Bismuth!

If you missed "Inspiration That Rocks" Style #2 Opal, you can view the post HERE.

This mineral took my breath way.  I was entranced for 20 minutes staring at the crystalline structure. I see towers in decay, marching columns, collapsing terraces, twisted picture frames, toppling roofs, and winding staircases.  The sample as a whole strongly resembles a city in ruin. The rich colors are translucent, iridescent and metallic. Since it's a photograph, I had difficulty identifying the Mineral.

BISMUTH
Every mineral has a unique set of properties that determine it's identity.

1. Color
2. Streak
3. Luster
4. Cleavage
5. Hardness (MOHS Scale)
6. Crystal Structure and Shape
7. Specific Gravity

All very difficult to test without the actual sample. I can't turn the crystals to count the number of faces.  Although the crystals are elongated, and are perhaps twins, again I can't be sure.  I can't guess the molecular weight without at least holding it in my hand. I can't break a piece off or scratch it with various objects to determine the hardness as described by the MOHS Hardness Scale.

Heidi and Andrew (both Geologists) were able to determine that this Mineral is BISMUTH.  However, the crystals in this sample are not naturally occuring in nature.  This particular sample of Bismuth is lab grown.

This outfit would not be possible without the inspiration created by the image of the mineral. The combination would never have occurred to me.  It's also very difficult to relate the inspiration back to my Readers. I pulled this outfit together in an amazing 15 minutes.

Unlike the Opal of last week, this mineral forms cubic picture frame like shapes.  The varying shades of Green, Blue and Purple with a White translucent quality are nicely mimicked in the print of Anthro's Building Blocks Top by Deletta.

Unknown Mineral

Another characteristic that inspired me was the Iridescent Blues in the Mineral. Denim would be a perfect answer.  Even better is Leifsdottir's Dark Denim Ruched Panel Skirt. In addition, the ruched panel on the skirt front directly translates to the stacked, elongated crystals that form rows of columns or stairs depending on which direction the crystals are oriented.

The same column like behavior is seen again in the vertical piping on Anthro's From The Poles Jacket by Sparrow. See me wear this Jacket differently HERE. Honestly, I would have never in a Million Eons thought up this combination.  I was amazed that I could transfer these characteristics directly over to styling an outfit.  And it took no more than 30 minutes of effort.

The Belt is another leftover pre-Anthro piece from Kohl's that served to add a tiny bit of sparkle and shine.

Nothing like this gorgeous Purple pair of  Seville Heels by Coclico with staircase like ruching right down the front. I had just received the Opaque Tights in Green by Hue the same day, and planned to use them for something entirely different that fell through.  Perfect timing. Olive Green, Navy and Purple are such a marvelous color combination.

You can see a slightly better view of Anthro's Meteorology Necklace made from Smokey QTZ, Purple Amethyst and Lime Green Prynite.

Dear Readers,
Can you spot some of the visual characteristics of the Mineral Bismuth that I attempted to capture in my photos.

Hints:  For example, the Green Light Pole next to the Yellow Bicycle resembles the columns formed by the elongated crystals.

Please send me more Rock and Mineral Photos.   See the Guidelines for Submission, outfit post dates and Giveaway at the bottom of the Post HERE.

Your outfit would have been beautiful on its own, but that you "built" it in relation to the crystal is genius! I think this is a perfect wearable inspiration! It would have been easy to throw on some purple sequins and call it a day, but you really layered on your pieces with attention to not on the color but structure of the shapes, love it!

Yes Lisa! Thank you for your comment. That is exactly what I have been attempting to accomplish with this series of inspirational styles. I've done this before using only color. So different when you throw in texture and geometry. I would have never put these items together on my own either.

Great outfit! You really captured the characteristics of the mineral really well! And it looks like you had loads of fun during the photo shoot!

Photo shoots are fun. When I headed downtown I had no idea where I was going. I was looking for background features that would enhance the photos.

So many things I love about this post! I am a serious rockhound. My fav section of the Musuem of Natural History is the "rock" room with all those lovely colored gems, crystals, etc.

Now, you also have on the skirt which has been on the top of my wishlist for a while. Now I have to bite because it is just so darn cute on you! Love it.

Great story here, great photos, great outfit. Way to go! :)

I've had that Denim skirt for ages. Got it on Guilt Fuse cheap. Where did you find it? Or is Leifsdottir making another like it. Have to be careful with it. Don't tuck a White or very light colored top under or even over the Denim. It bleeds onto anything light. I was upset the first time I wore it with a Cute White Anthro Tee. Ruined it!

I LOVE that outfit! It is perfection and those shoes are fabulous. That is a pretty mineral, too. I teach physical science sometimes and we talk about minerals.

The difficult part was identifying the mineral from a photo. I didn't know it wasn't a naturally occurring crystal.

Ya know, I just realized today that I enjoy learning about rocks and minerals as much as I do about fashion. It is a sexy topic :)
Nice job Laura. btw, did you catch that umbrella on its way down?

It took several photos to get a nice one. Caught some! I was trying not to use my left hand because of my trigger thumb. So I put my left arm out which turned out rather cool in the Photo.

When you think about the terminology, very sexy. Like Cleavage. Ha-ha!

It's getting easier every time I do an inspired outfit. I really do have to practice at using inspiration. And it's tough when it has to come from a limited source.

Beautiful outfit! I can definitely see many different elements of the mineral in our outfit and in the photo shoot location. This is such a fun feature:)

I took a lot of photos. Of course many were not so great. I really wanted to get some steps into the mix, but the sun was always in the wrong direction, or steps were in the shade. It was also a dark cloudy day. The sun came out briefly for some of the images. I forgot to use the high color setting to really bring out the colors.

Love this outfit! I really like the vertical blocks in the top paired against the horizontal texture of the skirt. Really great inspiration from this mineral!
First, what a beautiful rock - I've never seen anything like it. I love that you used it as inspiration for your outfit. And it is such a gorgeous outfit that does the rock much justice! I can see how you've combined textures, colours and patterns to resemble the rock. I love that picture of you throwing the umbrealla!
I love this, this is amazing!!!!
Your creativity is an inspiration all its own! While I love your park photos, that sculpture was the perfect backdrop for these photos, you really thought of everything. And those shoes.. I remembered them immediately from when I was sleuthing through your online wardrobe and they stopped me dead in my tracks - gorgeous!!

I think that luck has pretty much been following me through this whole experience. Tomorrows Post for Style #4 explains how different the process worked for the first Four. When I really thought about how I handled each, I was surprised by how I made it all work.

Sometimes I knew exactly what I wanted to do. At those times everything was charmed. Other times I really had to work at it. But in the end I was happy with the results.

My problem with my hands is really putting a damper on my time. This challenge should be over before I have surgery on my thumb.

During the week I've been so tired I don't even want to do OOTD's. I've gone an entire week now without posting. I've never gone that long.

The rock is amazing, and I love the outfit, especially the shoes! Hope you are feeling better soon

Hi Laura! Oh my -- this is a city gal's rock if I've ever seen one. The picture of Bismuth looks like a miniature city, with tightly packed skyscrapers. And the blouse you picked replicates that look so very well. And the vertical zippers on the jacket lend an extra "urban coolness" factor. You did a fantastic job capturing the essence of this mineral. And it's so nice to see the purple Colico's getting some love. This is the perfect place for them to make their debut!

I think Bismuth is too soft for jewelry. But style #6 Labradorite makes gorgeous jewelry. And
