Eva Franco's Bloomtown vs Anthro's En Plein Air Dress!

Violet Bloomtown Belted Dress (AKA Anthro's En Plein Air)  - by Eva Franco - Rue La La Orig $228 Sale $80 - July 2011
Jackie Cardigan in Breeze - by J Crew  - Orig $62 Sale $40 - July 2011
Stone Garden Necklace - Anthro $178 - Dec 2009

You may recall, I ordered Anthro's En Plein Air Dress by Eva Franco for the amazing price of $70 down from $258.  What possessed me?  The 2nd Cut Pop Back Devil in me.  Naturally I didn't check the reviews until after the deed was done.  Only to discover the dress ran small.  Sure enough, I couldn't zip it past my rib cage.

Lucky for her, I sold the size 4 En Plein Air Dress to a Local Reader.  At which time I had the great pleasure of meeting the lovely Allison.

I chose J Crew's Jackie Cardi in Breeze (pale Blue-Green) to top this dress for Summer.

JG of Stuff Jewish Girls Like came to my rescue.  It happened that Rue La La was having an Eva Franco sale that very day.  Amazing at it seems, the Violet Bloomtown Belted Dress (AKA Anthro's En Plein Air) was included in the online Boutique. Using JG's link for the purchase, was my way of thanking her with a $10 credit.  It was well deserved.

I soon discovered that no two dresses are created equal.

When the size 8 Violet Bloomtown Belted Dress arrived I was completely surprised to find that the dress fit.  Although, it runs big through the waist, but nothing a belt can't handle.  This dress is definitely cut with a smaller Bust and larger Waist in mind.  I also discovered a few favorable, and one not so favorable difference.

1.  The fabric and print are exactly the same.  Polyester (gag), in a stunning but heavy weight print.  It seems this has become an Eva Franco trend.  I see it this way, who's going to know but me and you. I wouldn't purchase full price, but I didn't bat an eye at 60 to 70% off.  As you will see at the end of this post.

The Violet Bloomtown with Anthro's Stone Garden Necklace.
A match made in Heaven!

2.  The En Plein Air (if I remember correctly) is lined in Gold, while the Violet Bloomtown is lined in Bright Orange (my favorite color).
3.  I paid $10 more for the Violet Bloomtown..  Well worth it to me.
4.  Both dresses came with a coordinating belt, however the Violet Bloomtown does not have grommets inset in the holes. So the look is not as finished.  But the odd thing is, both the size 4 (En Plein Air) and the size 8 (Bloomtown) Belts were far too big for me.  I cut two additional holes in my Belt.
5.  But my favorite difference is the length.

The shorter Violet Bloomtown makes it a wearable, everyday Dress.
The hemline hits at a flattering and less formal above the knee location.
My Closet happily contains it's first ever Eva Franco Dress.

Hold that thought....

I chose Anthro's Many Roads Booties by Zita Maria.
A light, open Sandal Boot, with just enough heel.
While searching for an image of the actual Violet Bloomtown version of Eva Franco's dress, I stumbled onto...

Who knew such a place existed?

I was stunned by my discovery. Here were a slew of dresses at amazing prices.  All in Rayon and Polyester.  See what I mean about a growing trend?  Oh well!  I didn't bat an eye at purchasing two amazing Eva Franco Dresses.

Violet Dress in Blue - By Eva Franco - Amazon Orig $312 Sale $92 - Aug 2011

The Violet Dress has one, three star review. No details are given to support the claim that the fit was frumpy. Since the Bloomtown is an 8, I went with that.  I'm not even sure the belt is included.  The color combination and similarity in cut to the Violet Bloomtown were the attraction. Both dresses carry the name Violet.

Archer Dress in Opus - by Eva Franco - Amazon Orig $295 Sale $59 - Aug 2011

No reviews available. I also went with size 8.  I'm hoping I can wear this as an everyday dress.

Not that Eva Franco could ever replace Corey Lynn Calter's Silk/Cotton Blend Dresses filled with Fabulous-sity.  See my growing CLC Collection HERE!

BTW,  there is an Eva Franco Store.  Also, Modcloth carries Eva Franco.  Most of the styles have already made their way through Anthro.  The Mullany Look Alike is to be released from production soon.

Do you love Eva Franco?  Do you cringe at her choice of fabrics? I can't help but notice that her Polyester choices are beautiful and high quality. Polyester will literally lasts forever.

Oh why did you have to let me know there was an Eva Franco store on Amazon?! Gah! I think I may need to also purchase that Archer dress - it is darling! We're going to have to bloggy-coordinate outfits!

I would never hold out on you Lisa. Honesty is the best policy. So, did you get the Archer Dress?

Hey! I know! If you do decide to order the dress and it works out for you, we could do a second edition of my" Operation Anthro Switcheroo" Blog Collaborative. Mandy of Bobs and DooDads agreed to try it out the first time. She came up with the title. We both styled the Hanging Gardens Cardi. Then we tradedoutfit photo's and wrote a story about each other. We did the project over the period of about 2 weeks.

You are an excellent writer. Of course it all hinges on the dress being a keeper for the both of us. The whole idea is for bloggers to communicate behind the scenes and agree on how the effort will work for both of them. Each experience is supposed to be unique. When we did this ,I had no idea how it would turn out. We decided on the time period. I sent her my rough draft post. She then took my lead on the story line. Then we set an agreed upon post date and time, so the two posts would pop up simultaneously on Blogger Dashboard.

I really enjoyed the experience and have wanted to try it again. It's a great way to practice creative writing and blog communication skills.

Oh my, you look great in this dress Laura!! Great find and super-sleuthing skills from JG! I ordered the dress back at the beginning of June but haven't worn it yet. It's definitely a bold number but I'm still in favor of it and should wear it soon. I love the necklace you paired it with, seems to bring out all the colors!

How do you not wear a new dress immediately Dea? I can't save a dress for the life of me. I know some women that have saved a dress for a special occasion for a year. By then, at least for me, it's no longer a new dress.

I hope to see you in your En Plein Air soon. It's the perfect dress for your svelt figure. Did you notice that I turned the color volume down just a tad with the pale Jackie Cardi?

From my Yahoo Mail - Laura
That dress looks great on you Laura! The length is very flattering. Right now I have my eye on Eva Franco's Shirr & Pleat Pencil Skirt. The only thing I found at this week's sale were a couple of chemises (Impressionist and Match Set), plus a couple of belts. I've lucked out and found a lot of other nice tops and dresses recently though, so maybe my wallet will be getting a break soon!
I love the dress on you. I actually have that same J. Crew cardigan. It's perfect to tone down the colors a bit. I haven't worn my dress yet. I think it might be too dressy for work.

Diem! I wore this outfit to work Monday. Try the Jackie Cardi in Breeze over the dress to cool the color tones, and a Brown Sandal or Pump. Of course, only you know what is appropriate for your work attire.

I got a gorgeous Eva Franco dress on Amazon a few weeks back. It's cobalt blue with a cut-out pattern that I love. It's also poly/rayon but still feels good on the skin.

I don't always love EF dresses (case in point: I didn't care for the cut of the Mullany) but I almost always love EF skirts. She makes sleek, flattering pencils that I adore.

The Neptune Dress. I was looking at it last night when I stumbled on the store. My size is OOS. I have the Cafe Cream Skirt and the Dreaming in Green skirt, so we share a love for Eva Franco Skirts.

Do you know any other online stores that carry older Eva Franco stock?

From my Yahoo Mail - Laura
I don't, unfortunately. That's why I was so excited to find out that Amazon now carries some of the older pieces. The company website is disappointing on that front, too. But I LOVE the Neptune. If it pops back in your size, get it!
I wonder what the likely hood is of the Neptune Popping Back? Slim to none? Ha-ha! Don't make me sad that I missed it. It's such a cool dress with those cut outs.

Love love that blue dress! So pretty :) I think the length of your version of the dress is much more practical. Very nice Laura :)

It is a different color for me. I have never gravitated towards the Blues. I am told that I should. But I think the dress is cut the same as the Bloomtown, so hopefully is will have the same flattering fit.

OMG! I just saw your DISQUS reply. You are getting married this month. I am so thrilled for you guys. I can't believe the time is already upon you. I wish you all the happiness that could ever be possible.

I think that LBD is gorgeous, and though black makes me yawn-yawn-yawn, I know once you get this on and gussy it up, it will be anything but a yawn-fest. Can't wait to see the review. I also love the print of the Violet Dress with the orange belt. Blue and orange are so made for each other. I think you're totally right about the length on the cousin to En Plein Air. It looks fantastic on you. And I swear, my lips are sealed about the poly. :)
Gahh...it amazes me how two *identical* Eva Franco dresses could be different! I do really like the shorted length of the Bloomtown - it's more wearable, especially for those under 5'6". I'm glad you were able to find one your size (good on JG!!) - it looks wonderful on you and you have styled it very well. I love Eva Franco, the designs are so feminine. The only EF item I own though is the Mullany dress (worth every full price cent...).

The Mullany is adorable on you Jen. Maybe I should get the one That EF designed for Modcloth. Hey thanks for pointing out the Animated GIF in your last post. I made one. Where have I been that I miss this stuff. Funny I commented right after you on Lorispeak. I had asked het about the GIF and she answered in her Post. But it was you who educated me. Thank you again!

Glad you made one Laura! I don't remember educating you...glicker is very easy to use! Would love to see your animation
Jen,

My review for the Backswept Dress just posted. The GIF is at the top. It's pretty cool. But it was a pain to make. The first time I published it didn't work. I didn't realize it was too big for Blogger. So I reduced all 9 images to a smaller size. Then it worked. It was your friends Birthday Post with you dancing in the Mompos. That was all the education I needed to try Gickr.com.

I love that Eva Franco Violet dress! It's so pretty with the orange. I didn't pick up anything from the Anthro sale but I've been thinking about the backswept dress. I haven't seen it in stores by me so I'm worried it won't fit me right!

Funny you mention the Backswept Dress Tammy. I just published my Blog Review Post. I love that dress. It would be perfect for you.

From my Yahoo Mail - Laura
BTW, Just order your normal size for CLC. Ie. the same size as your Monochromatic Dress.
yay! thanks for the review! I just might have to make the purchase. It looks great on you!
Hi Laura! How did it go with the Violet Dress in Blue? I´m really interested in buying it but since I live overseas (Sweden) I´d love to have a review to lean on before ordering. Did it fit you? Does it look as nice as you hoped? :) Have a great day!

I just wore the dress yesterday. The 8 fits the same as the En Plein Air version. It's fine through the chest and at least 2 inches too large through the waist. That's what belts are for. But, the belt that came with it is awful. I can send a photo or 2. I just don't have time during the week to post and I'm leaving for NYC on Saturday. But I can send you pictures if you like.
And answer any questions you have. If you are larger through the chest size up. It'd say D cup or larger. I'm a 34 D. Normally Wear a 6. My chest is 35, waist is 28 and hips 36 inches.
